Students can choose to pledge either 50 hours or 100 hours of pro bono and public service over the course of their law school career. The phrase \u201cequal justice under the law\u201d embodies a professional obligation that justice must be available to everyone regardless of economic status. Through the Pledge, we hope to instill this importance in our students. If they commit to pro bono as law students, our hope is that they will commit to pro bono as practicing attorneys.<\/p><p>In addition, there are certain practical aspects to practicing law that students will never learn sitting in a classroom \u2013 including learning how to talk to a client plainly and succinctly about the law, learning how to manage expectations, learning how to manage time \u2013 all of these skills come from requiring a student to use his or her growing legal knowledge in the real-world, in real-time.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2542\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2542\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened\"><i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fas fa-caret-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-toggle-title\" tabindex=\"0\">What qualifies as pro bono or public service work?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2542\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2542\"><p>For purposes of the Pledge, \u201cpro bono and public service\u201d is defined as all unpaid, law-related work (including but not limited to legal research and writing, interviewing, counseling, oral or written advocacy, or representation of individuals) supervised by a licensed attorney or other qualified supervisor which serves marginalized groups, non-profit organizations, or governmental entities.<\/p><p>Students may not receive any financial compensation for pro bono and public service work. In addition, in the case of a paid internship with a firm, any pro bono work done during such internship cannot be counted as pro bono hours.<\/p><p>Any pro bono and public service work performed to fulfill requirements of a clinic or externship, or to obtain other academic credit, will not be counted towards recognized pro bono and public service hours. Students are provided instructions on how to report their pro bono and public service hours. Students are responsible for entering all pro bono and public service hours into Symplicity. In the past, students have worked unpaid for legal aid organizations, public defender\u2019s offices, federal and state agencies doing law-related work, and international public interest and human rights organizations doing law-related work.
